RIDOC has an on-site comprehensive medical program in each facility provided by board-certified internists and generalists under the clinical supervision of the Medical Program Director, Michael Poshkus, MD. Adjunct medical staff includes physician assistants, nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists, supplemented with contract physicians as needed. On-site clinics occur regularly during evening hours and on weekends to accommodate the needs of the inmate population. There is a board-certified on-call physician at all times. Acute medical/surgical intervention is accomplished through utilization of community hospitals – primarily Rhode Island Hospital but including Women &Infants, Miriam and others. The DOC has a contract with Stat Care in Warwick to provide emergency care when a trauma setting is not indicated. Specialty medical services include HIV care through physicians from Miriam Hospital and cardiology and orthopedic care provided on-site by specialists in the field. RIDOC Health care Services also partners with Brown University Medical School in providing clinical experience for medical students and residents in the area of correctional medicine and communicable diseases.
