Volunteer / Intern Opportunities

The Office of Volunteer Services and Internships is responsible for the recruitment, placement, and coordination of all volunteers and interns throughout the various units of the Department of Corrections.

The Rhode Island Department of Corrections encourages the use of volunteers and student interns to augment services to the offender population. Volunteers and student interns represent a cost effective means of providing valuable and professional expertise and also foster understanding and cooperation between the RIDOC and various community groups, religious groups, colleges and universities, and the public at large.

All volunteers and interns must fill out an application and go through the BCI and NCIC inquiry. In addition, they must attend a mandatory orientation held at the RIDOC's Training Academy.

Interns work under the supervision and guidance of a DOC staff person in accordance to the criteria of their college or university.

Internships may be available in Minimum Security; Medium Security; the Women’s facilities; the Planning & Research Unit; the Professional Services Unit, the Legal Department; the Business Office; the Information and Public Relations Office; Health Services; Mental Health Services; the Special Investigations Unit; the Community Confinement Unit (electronic monitoring); and the Adult Probation and Parole Departments located throughout the state including the Electronic Monitoring/Parole Unit, the Domestic Violence Unit, the Drug Court, and the Sex Offender Unit.
