DOJ Settlement Information
On September 19, 2017, the Federal District Court entered a Settlement Agreement between the State of Rhode Island and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) resolving a law suit filed by the DOJ alleging the written and video exams used by the Rhode Island Department of Corrections (RIDOC) for selecting entry-level correctional officers between the
years 2000 to 2013 caused an unintentional adverse impact against Hispanic and African American applicants.
As part of the settlement the State has agreed to provide monetary relief and consideration for priority hire to individuals eligible for such relief as outlined in the Settlement Agreement. Individuals who meet the criteria may be eligible for monetary relief and/or consideration for priority hire.
If you identified as African American or Hispanic when you applied to be an entry level correctional officer between the years 2000 – 2013 and you did not pass the written examination and/or the video examination administered by the Rhode Island Department of Corrections between 2000 and 2013 (including applicants who passed these tests at a later time and were hired by the RIDOC), or if you did not pass the written exam but passed the video exam administered by the RIDOC in 2017, you may be eligible for monetary relief and/or consideration for priority hire as a correctional officer.
If records show that you identified as African American or Hispanic when you applied to be a correctional officer, your last known mailing address and email address will be provided to the DOJ. You will be contacted by the Claims Administrator and receive a notice and instructions on the steps you must take to submit an Interest-In-Relief Form to the Claims Administrator. Filling out the Interest-In-Relief Form does not guarantee that you will receive relief, but you may not be eligible to receive any benefits if you do not complete and return the form.
If you would like to submit your current mailing address and email address, please submit e-mail to the following address with information: email@example.com
